I Love My Garden

March 29, 2012

Grabbed a branch and found a heart.

We’ve been taking advantage of the nice weather by getting the garden ready.  Usually I wait until the day that we plant everything to clear away all the leftover weeds and leaves that have collected over the fall.  Not this year.  One of my goals for the new year was not to leave everything for the last minute, you know procrastinate. *pat on shoulder*

Taken on the first day of Spring, 3-20-12

As you can see from the above photo there is a LOT to be cleaned up in the garden this year.  I believe there’s enough “hay-like” weeds in here to feed the whole stable of horses.  I was slightly embarrassed to post this picture.

I’ll post an update as to how the clean-up is going.  I’m working on a blueprint of what is going in the garden.  No watermelon this year.  It takes up too much space.  I’ll support another local farmer at the market this year.  That will free up a lot of room for something else.  Speaking of watermelon, have you ever seen the square watermelons?  Quite interesting.  Here’s a link for a YouTube video explaining the process.

We didn’t plant a garden last year and it was the single most thing I missed all winter.  I enjoy harvesting the vegetables to use through out the year.
Tip:  I can’t express enough how much I love the dog kennel we used to build the frame of the garden.  We recycled it from a neighbor who was going to throw it away.  I needed to find a way to keep my three dogs out of the garden and the chicken wire wasn’t working.  So, if you have similar issues with dogs (or any animals) climbing in and eating the goodies look for a used kennel in your local paper or perhaps Craigslist.
